Sports in Schools

The Sello Mbuli Foundation focuses on fostering positive upliftment of children by teaching them to prioritise participating in sports. We recognise the value of school sport and physical education to provide the foundations necessary for the holistic development of the learner in support of the academic curriculum.

School sport is the bedrock of sports in the country. In recent years we have seen that the Department of basic Education (DBE) has taken a conscious decision to encourage learners to participate in a variety of sport activities. As the Foundation we are of the belief that participation in sport has many important benefits. Sports can unite our people, build families and communities, prioritise their education and to steer away from social ills dominating our societies. Enjoying different types of sporting codes provides a different yet positive alternative versus the impact discord children have to endure in South Africa. Through the Sello Mbuli Foundation, children from impoverished communities are provided the opportunity to play and enjoy sports in a safe and structured environment while simultaneously receiving an education on important life skills.

Sports provides challenges and adventures, fills vacuums and gives meaning and a sense of purpose to people’s lives. Regardless of the extent to which it takes place, participation may foster self-worth, confidence, and self-respect in learners. We consider this to be a fundamental value, which is why we are working to instil it in the youth and students in our communities.

Surveys have shown that sports can also be used to reduce the social stigma experienced by marginalised groups, including people with disabilities, people with HIV and AIDS and still manage to curb the spiking drug abuse that persists in our communities. By encouraging these individuals to participate in sports activities with other community members, a shared space and experience is created to remove negative perceptions and enables people to focus on what they have in common.

This is an important step in enhancing these individuals’ self-concept and emotional health.

Therefore, by assisting in the reduction of social exclusion and encouraging lifelong learning, sports has the power to empower people and break down social barriers.

Emerging evidence highlights the impact of sports in creating stronger communities and addressing issues of community safety, including reductions in anti-social behaviour and reductions in the propensity to commit crime. Sports has proven to be an attractive alternative to overcome the root problems associated with crime, violence and drug usage.

Objectives:

  • Promoting sports as a career among youth and increasing their participation in regional, national and international events for volunteer and employment opportunities.
  • Using sports to create a peaceful and drug-free environment and society.
  • Offer an active alternative to counter the sociopolitical status quo.
  • Developing sports centres with sporting equipment to enable youths have recreation and improve physical fitness.
  • Providing employment to youth.
